If you are in the market for a new computer and a salesperson asks you what features you are specifically looking for, you may spout off a few details, such as: 512KB RAM, 160 GB hard drive, flat panel monitor, wireless optical mouse or any of a dozen other desired features. The salesperson is much better equipped to find a computer that matches your description if you provide the right kind of information. The same is true of an objective statement. If you dont use one, an employer might not be able to figure out what type of position you are seeking. Do not assume your resume is clear and to the point. Do not assume your cover letter will be able to convey everything, either. The cover letter might not even get read. Even if it does get read, it could very easily get separated from your resume. If that happens, the employer has no lead-in to your resume and it has to stand alone. It is for this reason that the objective statement becomes critical. Are you interested in getting hired for a specific position or are you ok with interviewing for any position an employer has available? Most people are relatively specific about the kind of work they want to do. You probably are, too. That means the employer needs some direction from you. The objective statement tells the employer what you are interested in. A well written objective statement does it in a way that lets the employer know what you can do for them, too. What can an objective statement do for you? It can: Arouse interest in the rest of the resumeInject energy and enthusiasmExpress your desire to contribute to the organizationArticulate your knowledge of one or more aspects of the company Use the objective statement to garner interest in the rest of your resume. Be specific and target every word to the position desired and the employers needs. Employers are not mind readers. Like most animals, we prepare for the winter time. We know that it will be cold so we want a layer of fat to keep us warm. Another aspect of it is, we are greedy. All people are greedy. We want the best of everything. We want a nice new car, new house and all the rich food that we can eat. In the past, a wealthy person ate different foods than someone who is poor. What am I saying in the past? It really hasnt changed that much has it? So, whats a person to do when they want that little bit of heaven at the end of the meal, but don’t want dont want to live with the after effects? Well, you can have your cake and eat it too. There are more healthy deserts that you can eat, alternatives that wont keep adding on those extra pounds and ounces. Before we take a look at a few ideas, try not to be misled by all the low fat stuff. It isn’t worth the time. You will eat twice as much of it to fill your cravings. It is because it is missing something, the fat. The one thing that you are craving the most. In the end you aren’t really doing yourself any favors. You are falling in the trap that all fat people fall into. They think since it is low fat, they can eat twice as much of it. Fresh fruit is always a good desert. You can prepare it easily and it tastes great. Nothing tastes better than fresh fruit that is in season. Make sure that it is perfectly ripe and ready to eat. If it is ripe, it will be sweet and juicy. If you eat fruit that isn’t ripe it will be hard and not have all the flavor that it can yield. You don’t have to stick with the same old, boring fruit salad. You can choose a ton of different ways to eat fresh fruit. You can bake apples for example wrapped in tin foil with a little bit of brown sugar. This is wonderful. One of my favorite things is bananas sliced in orange juice. The sweet tangy flavor of the orange juice is really different compared to the banana. I could eat a truck load of this stuff. It is also a great pick me up if you are feeling sluggish. Have you seen those wand mixers advertised on television. Some people call these boat motors. It is a hand held mixer/blender that you can use for a lot of things. I love these things. If you have one of these, it is easy to make a great low fat desert. Here is a simple desert using your boat motor. Take skimmed milk. You need to make sure that it is ice cold for this. Take your milk and put it in a drinking glass. Use your boat motor to whip air into it. You will notice after awhile it kind of looks like whipped cream. Add some bananas and strawberries and a little pinch of sugar to make it sweet. This is very low fat and it tastes great. You get that desire for fat taken care of that you have been craving so much. The whipped milk really almost feels like whipped cream. You won’t believe how much it feels like the real thing. You can also use this to add some zing to all kinds of things. You can use it to make your low fat milkshakes. You can add your protein mix to this for a great meal with very little fat. You will be surprised at how many things you can do with this whipped topping. People will think that you have fallen off of your rocker when they think you are eating a big serving of whipped cream. Before you know it, all your buddies at the gym will want you to make them something to eat with your boat motor. That is when you will have to tell them to get their own. You can also eat gelatin. Make sure that you get the unflavored kind. It will come in either envelopes or in sheets. There will be directions on the package to tell you how to make it. You can add fruit juice or you can add fresh fruit to your gelatin. If you have a boat motor, you can use it and add some of that whipped topping you make from the skimmed milk. You will love this. How about low fat cakes. Just because it is cake, doesn’t mean that it is bad for you. Just make sure that there isn’t a whole lot of eggs or dairy produce involved. Also sometimes people sneak in mayo in their cake batters. Make sure you know what is on the cake. Also jam or jelly is great instead of frosting. I’m sure that you can come up with your own ideas as well. Just think of what you already like to eat and put a spin on it. Please, stay away from the low fat stuff. All that will do is make you crave more of that than you should be eating. In the long run, you aren’t saving any calories. Chennells pointed out to anyone who would listen that the taking of traditional knowledge without compensation was “bio-piracy” and must be stopped. In what is seen as a landmark case, Chennells was able to convince the CSIR and Phytopharm to compensate the Bushmen. Now, any company that legally harvests hoodia gordonii from the Kalahari Desert must pay royalties back to the Bushmen. Not only is this fair and just, it also provides an excellent way to check if the hoodia you buy is legitimate. If the company that makes the hoodia is NOT paying royalties to the Bushmen, you do NOT have a legitimate hoodia gordonii product. In December 2004, it was announced that Unilever had entered a deal to market Hoodia Gordonii in its diet food product line. Therefore, rather than producing diet drugs, it looks like Phytopharm and Unilever will product diet supplements and diet foods with hoodia. The first Unilever products will not be out until 2008. Unilever is a huge company that goes through a very lengthy process before it brings any new food supplements to the market. By Luca Del Bianco What defines friendship? What are the basic ingredients that make it work? Certainly friendship cannot be based only and entirely on trust, as trust cannot be taken for granted considering personal issues and beliefs can storm in at any time. So, where does someone live within the sphere of such relationship when the two common denominators keep on fluctuating under those unpredictable factors and behaviours? What happens when both parties start to realise that they dont have much in common after all? And most of all, why? I think we need to start by splitting in two main sub-categories a structure where true friendship represents one category while what we will define as shallow friendship, if only for reference purposes, represent the other. The latter is forged out of necessity, needs and fears: better to lean on someone rather than face the incongruence of our life alone, better to have someone else who can half the weight of our problems rather than having to carry the weight on our shoulders all by ourselves and still, better to have someone who will take our mind away from our own issues by presenting us, at least for a little while, with their own pieces of broken world. But if we were to analyse our true feelings on the subject from a different perspective, we would eventually realise that nothing leaves a bad taste in our mouth than an untruthful display of love or a constant dislike for reciprocal respect. Theres nothing worst than realising that, to give our time and us freely, could be taken out of its real context and could be translated into something completely opposite to what it was intended to be in the first place. Then again, are we supposed to censor someone elses take on our free choice of giving or, once its been given, should we allow free interpretation, even when that could potentially damage us? Whats more important, the personal philosophical reason behind an action, or the result it will eventually lead to? The deep meaning of a belief evolving from its roots to its natural state, or its impact surfacing into someones life? I believe the answer lies in the fact that in the true and honest act of giving, truth and honesty still lie within acceptance, if a relationship of any kind is destined to survive at all, for false pretences always carry a death sentence with them. Sooner or later they will reveal all the fundamental flaws that they inevitably hold within themselves, undermining and damaging irrevocably what was built on unsecured basis from the word go. Like promises of reciprocal love, friendship asks nothing else than to be respected in the same way. Interpretation its therefore invalidated as the universal meaning of a close connection such friendship takes over. To determine a fact is to imply our understanding of it through objectivity, hoping that the same respectful perception will take place in someone elses mind and soul. That, together with honesty of intent, should be enough to determine the truthfulness of a point of view. But thats seldom the case. Petty reasons defy the strongest of friendships sometime and few irate seconds blow apart years of closeness. Its sad to notice how mankind never seem to rise to the occasion, unless bound by tragic events. Nothing seems to undermine our arrogance of wanting to be right at all costs and every little word counts in what becomes a battle for the survival of pride in each and everyone of us. We dont realise that when someone lose we all do, for a piece of love denied is a piece of universe lost and that our hour of victory is, as a matter of fact, our hour of loss. True friendship, instead, has a more profound raison d’tre, as it lies at the core of human existence as we know it. Its when someone we know that values us that our place in the world is truly defined. Its when someone knows our most intimate secrets that, by accepting them without any form of judgment, it confirms our individual identity. Through relationships we learn about ourselves in a way that would not be possible otherwise, because we wouldnt have any external reference on which to mirror our own thoughts, behaviours and emotions. The lack of any feedback would therefore make any action absolutely worthless as no reaction or learning curve would come from it. But while a normal relationship grazes only the surface of who we really are, true friendship breathes us in, heedless of anything else but what is more important to us. The evaluation of our world assumes therefore the tones of a beautiful lesson where teacher and pupil transcend each other, as the importance of the purpose out weights the importance of the result. So is friendship merely a utopia? Obviously not. It might be hard to find most of the time and even harder to hold on to but it is a fundamental and indispensable part of our growth drawing us to the following conclusion: only other human beings will eventually determine our legacy, as the depth of what we achieved will be only a direct reflection of the depth of the change we caused in others.
