These are remarkable objects, created by the imaginative members of traditional civilizations. The tradition of masks dates back to the early 6th century B.C. It was used throughout the world. People from Alaskan cultures used masks along with drumming, dancing and story telling. They used then on many ceremonial occasions. However, after the influx of Christianity in the late 19th century, masked dancing was suppressed and today it is not practiced as it was before in the Alaskan villages. Masks were also used in Japan and Mexico. Mexican masks are spicy and humorous. In Puerto Rico, there are Vejigante masks. These masks show a fusion of African, Spanish and Caribbean cultures. The Vejigante is an imaginary character full of energy and color. In ancient times people used design masks. These masks were generally in the form of animals or other persons. These included ceremonial masks, festival masks and theatrical masks. In medieval Rome people used masks to hide their promiscuity, because Rome was less populated and people knew each other well. Common raw materials used for masks are clay, cloth, cornhusks, feathers, fiber, furs, grass, horn, leather, metal, paper, shell, stone paper, and wood. These range from simple masks to intricate carvings, and from polished wood to mosaics and gaudy adornments. Nowadays there are protective masks like gas masks, catchers masks in a baseball game and welders masks to protect from the intense light of welding machines. There are fancy dress masks, horror masks which range from acid face to zombies, pop star masks like masks of Michael Jackson and Madonna and political masks for political faces. Fly Fishing: All The Rods You Need

By Shannon Brown The modern period has been dominated by the development of new materials, and there is no doubt that without plastics, fly fishing as we know it would be unrecognizable as a sport, although the basic principles would be the same. Glass-fiber rods first appeared in the late 1940’s, but it took a while for the new material to be adopted. Suppliers showed varying degrees of enthusiasm for the material. Hardy’s first glass fiber rod was built in 1954, and after a period in which glass and cane uneasily coexisted, their first carbon fiber rod followed in 1976. Rod weights plunged, reaching the point where line weight became a consideration in rod handling. A modern fifteen foot carbon fiber rod typically weighs around the pound mark, and a nine-foot rod three and a half ounces. If anyone wonders why fiberglass did not replace split cane overnight, the answer lies in the table. Glass rods weighed much the same as their split cane equivalents, and offered the fisherman few advantages other than price. Carbon fiber, on the other hand, approaches half the weight of either split cane or glass. Once the technical problems of using the new material had been solved, carbon fiber rods entered mass production and neither of the older materials could offer any contest. Cane was swept away by the mid nineteen eighties, although it is making something of a comeback on aesthetic grounds. The Fly Line. As with rod development, the post-war period was dominated by the development of new materials. The taper on these lines could be controlled to a precise amount, and the invention of methods of altering the specific gravity of the PVC coating (and hence its buoyancy) gave the product greater flexibility than anyone had ever dreamed of in a fly line. The Reel. We are very nearly up to date on the subject of gear, but is one small piece of the jigsaw puzzle missing. At the beginning of the modern period, it was unusual to find fly reels with exposed rims. The last twenty years have seen a surge of nostalgia, and it is fascinating to see the designs appearing that imitate reels of a century ago. The Salmon Fly. In a sign of growing American dominance in the field, hair-winged patterns didn’t take long to make the transfer across the Atlantic. The hair-wing had become a significant influence on British patterns by the 1960s, with many traditional patterns being adapted to allow hair-wing ties. The origins of the tube fly are less certain. We know that North American native people tied lures for salmon on quills as long ago as the nineteenth century, but the idea seems to have entered mainstream salmon fly fishing during the 1940s. There is an interesting post-script to the development of the hair-wing salmon fly. Fishermen took a long while to give up their affection for the fully-dressed ‘gaudy’ fly, and it was commonly stocked by quite ordinary tackle shops well into the late 70’s and even early 80’s. Save a Partner Relationship: Work on a Happy Family

By David Quigley Arguments in any family relationship can be painful, sometimes destroying the love and trust between people, and leading to affairs, cold rejection, and finally divorce. And most of us did not learn from our family of origin how to conduct these arguments in any kind of safe loving fashion. This article, based on my own research and the work of family therapist and researcher John Gottman, will give you and your partner and family members lots of tools to help you to resolve arguments without damaging the relationships that are most important to you. Be warned however that if you intend to benefit from the advice offered here, you and your partner must both be willing to do your communication differently. It takes two to change a relationship. I remember a couple I saw for several sessions. The wife was highly critical, even verbally abusive toward her husband. I kept insisting that she please stop attacking him verbally. Her response was consistent. She would stop it grudgingly, and then resume her attacks a few minutes later. She was a native Sicilian who was convinced that she had a God given right to call her husband terrible names and yell at him whenever she wished. Why? “Because that’s the way they do things where I come from! And my folks stayed married all their lives.” In spite of her husband’s willingness to spend time in therapy, I recommended he leave this abusive relationship ASAP. He was in love, so he spent another year and a few more thousands in therapy before he realized there was no choice for him except to leave herand he deeply regretted not listening to my advice earlier. What I discovered many years ago is that no one changes their behavior unless they see the importance of such changes for their own lives. Lip service is not enough. And going to a therapist together to talk about your problems is not enough. Your partner and you must both be ready and eager to make changes in your communication strategies if you want to restore love and joy to your relationship. Sometimes ones partner will be willing to change only if you loudly and consistently threaten to leave unless your partner’s behavior changes. Sometimes I encourage this ultimatum approach. But alas even this approach will often only produce a temporary behavior change. Once this person has you settled back in, your suitcases unpacked, they will most likely fall back on their old habits. Therefore, I insist if I am going to help save a relationship, and I have saved many, both parties have to see the value of changing their behaviors and both must be eager to make these changes. Soif your marriage or family is troubled read this article. Then make sure your partner and family members read it. Maybe read it to them. Then if you both see the value of these new strategies, you are ready for a glorious rebirth of your relationship. And if your partner refuses, you need to examine how much longer you are willing to endure this relationship as it is. The first principle of conflict resolution is simple: your family is not your punching bag. Your partner and your children should be the most important and cherished persons in your world. I believe it is a great privilege to be gifted with a family, and that family deserves nothing less than ones full devotion and protection. Therefore no matter what your mate or children are doing, no matter how you feel about their actions, you have no right to act out your rage and hurt onto them. Period. Of course this means first and foremost that your family must be safe from physical violence, hitting, slapping, and destruction of property, yelling, and threats of violence. We must commit ourselves to giving up these behaviors. But the ugly behaviors that I call “acting out” are not limited to physical violence. How many of these forms of acting out are common in your family? Name calling, including derogatory terms like “lazy bum”, “dirty whore”, “idiot”, etc. Think for a minute about times in this relationship you have been called some ugly name. Do you remember how it hurt? Are there some that are especially painful or especially frequent? Are there any you use on your partner? Are you both willing to do your best to give them up? Exaggerating is a common and deadly form of acting out. Anytime you say in a heated rage “you always” or “you never”, you are not only exaggerating your partners flaws, but you are verbally condemning them, and you, to a relationship of utter misery. Remember when the heat is on: if this person is always this way and never that way, why are you with them? Punishing withdrawal is a subtle but painful form of acting out in which we withdraw from our partner physically or emotionally, especially in the midst of a crisis and when their need for us is greatest. Slamming the door as you walk out in mid argument, or putting on a fake smile and clamming up with a muttered “I’m fine” are good examples of this kind of behavior. Withdrawing your touch by denying your partner affection and sex is equally common. Having affairs or spending all hours at work or in a bar can sometimes be associated with punishing withdrawal. Of course all of us need time out from a troubled relationship sometimes, but search your soul to see if you are hiding from a relationship in order to punish your partner. This is different from withdrawing from a partner when they are acting out against us, which I call “safety withdrawal”, and which is an essential part of my work with dysfunctional families. Safety withdrawal is essential to protect oneself from abuse and teach a partner not to hurt us. But safety withdrawal can and should be done with love. “I won’t listen to you yelling like that. Remember David taught us not to act out. But I love you and I’m ready to discuss this with you when you are ready to do so calmly. Your feelings are important to me. I’ll be in my room.” This is an example of the valuable strategy of safety withdrawal. Notice that this includes reassurance of my love for my partner, appreciation for their feelings, and precise notice of my availability for discussing the issue calmly. Dragging up the past is a common strategy of acting out. However, the mention of problems from the past is not always acting out. It depends on how it is done. Listen to these two statements, and feel the impact they might have on you: Sharing feelings: “I’m worried about all the time you are spending at work. I’m afraid it might lead to an affair like what happened last year. That was so painful. I don’t think my love could survive another blow like that.” Dragging up the past: “How could you be so selfish as to be working late again? I haven’t forgotten that affair you had last year. You were such an ass! My mother warned me about guys like you. I should have believed her!” The difference between these two statements is the difference between acting out and expressing ones feelings and needs in a vulnerable and honest fashion. Of course it is very difficult to control our expressions of feeling when we are very upset. Most of us are human after all, rather than a Vulcan like Mr. Spock. But for us volatile humans there is a well established procedure for releasing our negative emotions before they are acted out on our partner with devastating consequences. Instead of acting out our rage and disappointment on our partner we need to release our rage privately away from our partner first, and then come to our partner when we have calmed down. There is an easy way to do this. Developed as “hot seat work” by Fritz Perls in the 1960s, this technique has been used effectively for anger management for decades and is easy to master. I recommend going to a private space, maybe a friend’s house or even outdoors. Imagining your partner is in front of you, do all the yelling, accusing, and hitting you need to do to release your rage. Then take a few minutes to imagine yourself becoming your partner. Explain as this partner the reason why things went the way they did. Once you have heard this telepathic explanation, you can prepare for a face to face communication with your partner. Remember the principles of problem solving that we discussed in our last article. (Creating a Happy Family Part 3: Clearing the toxic Assumptions that Destroy Intimacy) Be prepared to present your feelings as a problem to be solved, even if you have to write or rehearse your speech. Then you and your partner together can fix the problem while preserving intact the intimacy and love you have built together! Old habits are hard to change. So I recommend that you be patient with each other. When a fight begins, DO NOT take your partner’s assault as a deliberate attempt to sabotage the new plan. See it as a simple error, and offer a gentle reminder that we have agreed to do things differently now. Don’t hesitate to call a therapist if you need help who is trained in this technology. Instead of just going for the same old foods that you typically buy in the grocery store, date your food- take it home and try it out. Food: The Proof Is In The Portion

By Virginia Bola, PsyD We are a large people. 65% of us are overweight, 30% actually obese. How did we reach this point? We ate ourselves into a prison of our own fat. Why? Well, we certainly didn’t sit down and decide that we wanted to gain weight, did we? We had no pressure on us to fatten ourselves for some eventual slaughter. On the contrary, as our collective girth increased, we paradoxically elevated scrawny to a cultural icon, happily dismissing the corseted matronly figures of the past two centuries. Where did the disconnect between our reality and our ideals begin? We can blame the processors who milled out the vitamins and minerals we need. We can blame the preservers who cut back on fiber and freshness in favor of additives and chemicals. We can blame the packagers who added sugar and starch to everything. We can blame the fast food industry for frying everything and we can blame the beverage companies for their addictive colas. While all of these made their contributions to our current plight, one source of our caloric distress runs through everything: portion size. We eat hamburgers - not the gigantic, multi-patty ones, just a standard burger - that are 3 times as big as those of 30 years ago. Our orders of french fries are at least twice the size of their cousins in the 1970s. Pizza no longer has cheese only on the top but its crust is also filled. Large soft drinks are the size of watering cans instead of baby bottles. Recipes that once announced “serves 8″ now report “serves 4″ with exactly the same ingredients. Bagels and muffins are 3 to 4 times as large as their predecessors (and any fan of Seinfeld knows that only the tops are worthwhile). Thank heavens for hormones that can produce the 20 to 30 pound turkeys we demand for our holiday dinners. Compare the small boxes of frozen vegetables that so awed us in the 1950s with the huge bags available today, awash in butter or cheese sauce. The TV dinners we precariously balanced on rickety tray tables are now heavy enough that those same tables wouldn’t hold them. Restaurant meals have grown as well, with a “to go” container almost standard because few eaters can finish them (although we try terribly hard). Far from their smorgasbord roots, buffets have become almost obscene in their offerings. Whatever happened to nouvelle cuisine? Has the fastidious gourmet been completely swallowed by the voracious gourmand? Is gluttony no longer a deadly sin? We love nothing better than a good bargain: something for nothing or, at the very least, at a discount. If we can obtain just a few more ounces of something for negligible extra money, we pounce on the larger size. If we’re offered two for the price of one and a half, we don’t have to stop and think. If we can save money by buying a whole package, even if we don’t want all of it, we’ll do it because it makes economic sense (ah, the birth of super size!) Where did we get the idea that bigger is better? Is it the national legacy of the depression when we swore we’d never “do without” again? Is it a natural spillover from our thoughtless squandering of the world’s resources? Is it the speed and stress of our competitive lives that logically leads to our attacking our food with the same disregard for restraint we show in business? Whatever has brought us to this point, it is time for us all to cry “enough!” We may fear terrorist attacks or biological warfare but it is our daily over-consumption of food that is killing us. Diabetes, clogged arteries, and other obesity-related illnesses cost 350,000 American lives a year and the figure continues to climb. The associated medical costs are staggering and threaten eventual bankruptcy for the Medicare system if not reined back. Several states and school districts are attempting to apply brakes to a junk food society out of control. A change in the structure of our farm subsidy programs has been suggested - to reward the growers of healthy crops and penalize those who raise the building blocks of edible garbage (sugar and corn syrup). Taxation, as has been used to curb the purchase of cigarettes, could change the consumption equation by hitting our wallets (and a 1 cent tax on every soft drink sold in the United States would raise 40 billion dollars a year). However, the great change will only come when each of us, individually and collectively, start cutting back. We need to insist, repeatedly and loudly, that restaurants serve child and senior size plates to adults and split orders without extra charge (where are the class action lawyers when you need them?) We have to demand that small sizes of meal components are offered. We should start boycotting those huge “economy” sizes of everything from soft drinks, to frozen potatoes, to cooking lard, and potato chips. And the buck finally stops at our own plate. For our health, our longevity, and our looks, we must limit how much we eat of anything. If we cut our intake in half, we will be doing ourselves, our children, and our society a great favor and our bodies will thank us for it. Weight Loss Diets: How to Make Them Work

By Linda Smyth As we all know, weight loss diets are big business. And looking at the statistics, it’s easy to see why. Currently, an estimated 58 million American adults are overweight (BMI 25+), of whom an estimated 40 million are obese (BMI 30+), 9.6 million are seriously obese and 6 million suffer from super-obesity (BMI 40+). Worldwide statistics on overweight are equally alarming, as reflected in the new word “globesity”. In China, the number of overweight people has risen from less than 10 percent to 15 percent in just three years. In Brazil and Colombia, the figure of overweight is about 40 percent - comparable with several European countries. Even sub-Saharan Africa is seeing an increase in obesity, especially among urban women. In all regions, obesity appears to escalate as income increases. And the higher the incidence of obesity, the higher the incidence of weight-related disease, including: type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders like insulin resistance, and cancers of the breast and colon. CONVENTIONAL DIET METHODS Both the US Surgeon General and the Dietary Guidelines For Americans (2005) issued by the US Dept of Agriculture emphasise the need for calorie control and increased physical exercise to reduce the overweight epidemic, but evidence suggests that conventional diet methods do not provide significant weight reduction, due to poor compliance. Surveys show that annual weight loss resulting from convention diet and exercise programs averages less than 8 pounds per annum, while in a 4-year follow-up study of programs incorporating the use of obesity drugs, behavior modification, diet and exercise, the final average weight loss was 3 pounds. This apparent failure of conventional weight loss methods is often contrasted with the 30-40 percent average weight loss following bariatric surgery. FOOD COMPOSITION OF DIETS Fashion sells products, and weight loss diets are no exception. First we had low-fat diets, which were promoted as heart-friendly ways of reducing weight. Unfortunately, this message was interpreted by consumers as “all fats are bad, all carbs are good”, and led to an unhealthy overconsumption of refined carbs. With the relaunch of Dr Atkins “New Diet Revolution”, the fashion penduluum swung the other way. Now carbs were the enemy, not fat. After Atkins came the South Beach Diet, which offered us a more moderate low-carb approach. Now, it is GI diets - based on foods with a lower glycemic response - that are high fashion and, being scientifically more beneficial, are likely to remain so for some time. However, while the food composition of diets may change, the basic law of weight loss remains unaltered: calorie expenditure must exceed calorie intake. To this extent, provided a diet is calorie-controlled and includes foods from all food groups, the exact composition of foods remains no more than a matter of personal taste. GENERAL EATING AND EXERCISE HABITS When assessing the effectiveness of conventional dieting methods, due regard must be paid to general eating habits. In America at least, these do not appear to be helpful. Despite the mounting evidence of weight-related ill-health, social eating habits continue to develop in unhealthy directions. Value-for-money “supersizing” continues to attract customers, while fast-food sales continue to rise. And the continuing demand for “instant” food only inspires the food industry to produce more and more refined food options bulging with nutritional deficiency and calorie-overload. Is it any wonder that levels of diet-compliance among average dieters is so low? Meantime, an estimated 78 percent of Americans do not meet basic activity level recommendations, while 25 percent are completely sedentary. IS SUPPORT THE ANSWER? If conventional diet programs remain less than perfect ways of tackling overweight in the face of engrained eating habits, it would be misleading to write them off completely. Not only does research data from the US National Weight Control Registry demonstrate that long term weight reduction is perfectly achievable, a number of diet programs, especially medically-supervised clinic-based programs, are consistently effective. What distinguishes these diets is the level of counseling support which subjects receive. Nowadays, this support can be provided in various ways, including: mandatory group meetings, one-on-one sessions, online forums or chat-rooms. And it seems to work. For example, according to recent studies, the average weight reduction for a 10-12 week clinic-based obesity program involving meal-replacement diets, exercise and counseling support is 5.5 pounds. FINDING MORE SUPPORT If getting proper support is one way of improving conventional diets, dieters need to rethink their approach. Instead of focusing attention on finding the optimal eating-plan, they need to look for programs offering optimal support. Weight Watchers is an obvious choice but diets organised around the workplace or other social groupings may also provide natural help. Online programs with forum support might also be considered. In any event, there is no substitute for a reliable dieting partner. ADOPTING HEALTHY HABITS Given the fact that losing as little as 7-10 percent of body weight can improve many of the problems linked to being overweight, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, some obesity experts advocate a less formal approach to calorie control. They recommend adopting certain healthy habits rather than following a specific diet. An example might be a 200-calorie-a-day reduction achievable by taking a moderate 30 minute walk, and switching from (say) whole milk to skimmed milk. This saves 73,000 calories a year - the equivalent of 20 pounds of body fat. The commercial response to this approach is already visible in programs such as the “Three Hour Diet”, which recommends regular eating to maintain a regular rate of calorie burning. Expect to see more weight loss programs like this, which emphasise specific habits. CONCLUSION Current levels of overweight and obesity require urgent attention. To be effective, conventional diet programs need to provide optimal support rather than optimal food composition, in order to facilitate diet compliance. For people who are unable or unwilling to follow a specific weight loss plan, making small but specific changes may be sufficient to achieve significant improvements in health. By Martin Smith Brides have always worn white, right? Not so. In ancient times brides wore bright colored wedding dresses to signify their joy. White for western brides didnt become fashionable until Queen Victoria wore it at her wedding to signify her status. White dresses never did signify purity until the Christian churches put that label on them. So feel free to add a little color to your wedding outfit. Wedding bands made of hemp or braided grass were the earliest rings. They eventually fell out of favor, replaced by durable metals until about the 15th century when diamonds came upon the scene, to signify a valuable strong commitment, a tradition which most modern couples choose to keep. When grooms would capture their brides and or were afraid of evil spirits they would comer the womans head to keep her from being recognized. Bridesmaids dresses are all identical. Where did this practice originate? Long ago the brides friends wore the same exact outfit as the bride to confuse the evil spirits who wanted to destroy her happiness;. It also helped to prevent the bride from being kidnapped by a rival suitor. The receiving line developed from the ancient belief, that on their wedding day, the bride and groom brought good luck to everyone they touched. Modern couples often pass on this and prefer to make the rounds greeting their guests during the wedding dinner. In ancient Rome a marriage was not legal until the couple kissed. The kiss was considered a legal bond necessary to seal all contracts. This is thought to be the origin of the present day custom of banging a spoon against a glass until the newlyweds kiss. Will you have your dad walk you down the aisle? Do you know where this custom originated? Long ago, a woman was considered her fathers property until she married, and their she was her husbands property. At the wedding the Dad would literally give her away, transferring ownership to the husband. Now brides often have their fathers or both parents accompany them, and have the officiant ask Who supports this couple in marriage? The parents answer We do. There is no need to explain what the honeymoon is. But do you know where the term originated? In ancient Ireland, when a couple married, the parents would make sure they had a supply of a drink made from fermented honey called mead, that would last for a full cycle of the moon. It was believed they would be blessed with a son within a year. Back when a bride could be forced by a captor to marry, the groom would have to carry her against her will into her new home. The Romans thought that it was bad luck, for a bride to trip over the threshold so to prevent that, the groom carried her. During the Middle Ages the length of a brides train indicated her rank in court. The longer her train the closer she was to the King and Queen and the greater her influence with them. During the 18th and 19th centuries gloves were the traditional wedding favor for guests. Here are a few more unusual traditions from around the world. The Greek bride tucks a sugar cube in her glove to sweeten the union. According to Hindu beliefs rain on your wedding day is good luck.; Some western cultures believe rain is unlucky. In Holland it is traditional to plant a tree outside the newlyweds home as a symbol of fertility. Finnish brides traditionally carried a pillowcase door to door, collecting gifts. An older married man went with her, symbolizing a long marriage. Korean brides wear red and yellow outfits for their weddings. Danish brides and grooms used to confound the evil spirits by cross-dressing. Egyptian parents traditionally do all the cooking for a week, so that the couple can relax. In many cultures including Hindu, Egyptian and Celtic, the hand of a bride and groom are tied together as a symbol of their new bond and commitment to the marriage. This is the origin of the expression Tying then knot. In Roman mythology the god Juno rules over childbirth, marriage and the hearth. This is believed to be the reason for the popularity of June weddings. African-American weddings often hold to the tradition of jumping the broom. Slaves in the United States were not allowed to marry, so they would exhibit their love by jumping over a broom to the beat of drums. It now is symbol of the couples intention to set up a home together. Japanese couples become man and wife when they take the first of nine sips of sake. In Irish tradition once the bride and groom were in the church, the guests would lock the doors to make sure the groom couldnt back out. It was also important that a male not a female be the first to wish joy to the newly married bride. There is an old English rhyme that brides have been obeying for years. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. The actual rhyme also included this line and a sixpence in your shoe. Relatives usually offer the something old, like great grandmothers antique cameo, or your moms gown. These items provide continuity from generation to generation. The new symbolizes home for the future and can include your gown or veil , a strand of pearls, bouquet of silk flowers, or a new coin to tuck in your shoe. The choices here are endless. Borrowed happiness is symbolized by the something borrowed. It should be something that brought happiness to the owner. Some possibilities are your mother in laws ruby brooch, your dads silk handkerchief, or your parents wedding song. The blue something symbolizes fidelity, love and good fortune. Often, there is a blue ribbon on the garter. Other ideas are blue flowers, delphiniums, or irises in your bouquet, sapphire earrings and necklace, or even your lingerie. You may want to consider incorporating some of these ideas into your wedding plans. There are books and magazines that you can search for traditions from your own ethnic or religious traditions. Perhaps you like something youve heard about from another culture that you can adapt for your wedding. If you will have children at your reception you might want to borrow the Puerto Rican idea of pinatas, even the adults might enjoy that one.
